After the jungle tour -Back from the jungle, I took advantage of my last night in Chiang Mai by hitting up the local night bizarre. I wanted to get a few items to bring back home to folks, except I just had to remember I couldn’t bring a lot of stuff back since I barely had room in my suitcase as it was. I stopped and fueled up on Starbucks first (aahhh) and for dinner had a fantastic homemade hamburger at a stand called Mike’s. After 3 days of noodles, rice and eggs, it smelled soooo good as I passed by that I couldn’t resist the mouthwatering temptation to have a good bite of beef. I realized later it was in my lonely planet guide as a favorite spot so looks like I chose well!
In addition to the fantastic cheeseburger (with one onion ring on the side) that I devoured, my happiest purchase of the night also was my “Same Same” t-shirt. Not sure exactly how it got started, but everywhere in Thailand there is someone trying to sell you something and when they have two items that are similar style but maybe slightly different (like color), the Thai people say “Same same, but different”. Why they repeat it, dunno. And even the tribal kids were doing it too with the bracelets they were selling. So I had to get it – it’s totally Thai!
They mentioned in my travel book that the area at night around the night market can be shady for women alone. More so on dark side streets. I was around a ton of people while at the market so I felt fine and safe there. But after a night of shopping and eating, I headed back to the hotel, which was down a dark side street and it felt a little scary – So I ran my ass off back to my hotel…
